Fall is in the air and the autumnal equinox has arrived bringing shorter days. We are shifting into a new season and the possibility of a new way of being. We encourage you to check out the three upcoming workshops we have scheduled to rejuvenate and energize your mind and body as we enter Fall and look ahead towards the busy holiday season.

This will be a full-body experience blending directed effort, release, and attention to bring us closer to full, healthy functioning in the spine. The spine is our central point, the basis for everything we do in our bodies, but we can become disconnected to it in one or multiple areas, manifesting as pain/restriction in the spine itself, or in the major joint areas–hips and shoulders.

Join Southern Om teachers Sarah Oliver and Silica Larkin as we explore the 5 principles of re-engagement and awakening of the spine and the relationship of major joints to the spine for maximum suppleness, health, power, and ease.

Hot Yoga Studio Summer Challenge

May is Mental Health Month!

You know that yoga can improve your flexibility, strength and deliver terrific physical results but did you know that yoga has been proven to have amazing benefits in combating mental health issues like depression and anxiety?  Yoga has also been successful in treatment for those suffering from PTSD and for those diagnosed with schizophrenia.
Southern Om is proud to support local non-profit agencies that provide support services to those with a mental illness and their families.  Each Thursday, a SO instructor teaches a therapeutic yoga class to adults with a mental illness at Gateway, a Clubhouse model of psychiatric rehabilitation located near downtown Greenville. We are happy to announce that this month’s charity donation class is for NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) and their upcoming NAMI Walk being held on June 7 at Furman University.  NAMI provides support groups and education for those with a mental illness and their families. 40 Days to Personal Revolution

Looking to start your journey towards personal revolution? Mark your calendars now for the return of the popular Baron Baptiste 40 Days to Personal Revolution program.  Led by SO instructors Kelly Baird and Sarah Oliver, we will have our kick-off on Sunday, January 5 and the program will run through February 9.  Cost is $280 per person (includes unlimited yoga, book and journal), $140 (book and journal included) or $122 (journal included). REGISTRATION BEGINS NOVEMBER 15, AND THE PROGRAM WILL BE LIMITED TO THE FIRST 25 STUDENTS WHO REGISTER.

 Join us for a alignment based mindful Vinyasa flow. Moves at a slower pace than Southern Flow offering more of an internal focus as you refine and settle in to each posture with breath. Find both stability and strength in these longer holds as you come to “your edge” and breathe. Modifications offered for all levels. Hope to see you there!


Flow for a cause on Friday, November 8 during the 6:45 class!  While this class is normally $5 (a $10 savings from the drop-in rate), on the 2nd Friday of the month, we ask our students to make a donation that will go towards the studio charity of the month (suggested donation is $10). Inversion Workshop with Kristen Albert

Join Kristen Albert in an insightful, playful inversion workshop that will begin with a thematic Vinyasa flow designed to prepare your body for inversions. SO Welcomes Sarah Oliver to Teaching Staff

Yoga found Sarah Oliver back in 2004 when training and racing for endurance sports began to cause wear and tear injuries on a consistent basis. Once she landed on a yoga mat, she quickly learned to fully appreciate the mind, body and soul connection that only yoga seemed to be able to provide. In 2008, she received her 500 Hour Yoga Alliance certification through Sunstone Yoga in Dallas, TX and has been teaching and continually learning ever since. With a B.S. in Health Promotion, encouraging and enabling others to live a healthy lifestyle is what Sarah is truly passionate about.  She is also certified in Itsy Bitsy Yoga ©, SPINNING©, STOTT© Pilates, and is a USA Triathlon certified coach.  Sarah will be teaching the Southern Flow series at Southern Om.  Welcome Sarah!

Pose of the Month: Dhanurasana (Bow Pose)

In Sanskrit, Dhanu translates to bow. Asana means pose. The body looks like an archer’s bow. As the spine is toned and made flexible becoming elastic with practice, the abdomen is toned in this posture.   In Dhanurasana, as in all backbends, it is important to protect your lower back by keeping distance between the vertebrae in your lower spine.   This is accomplished by tilting the pelvis by moving the coccyx toward the pubic bone while simultaneously lifting the ribcage up from the pelvis.  This action should be maintained throughout the pose.  It keeps your lower back long with space between vertebrae and helps prevent back injury.

A Child’s Haven provides therapeutic intervention and prevention services for families and their young children who experience developmental delays as a result of abuse, neglect or poverty. Summer Challenge Results

Southern Om kicked off its 2nd annual Summer Challenge on June 12 and the last day to participate was August 20. The SO Challenge is a 70-day challenge designed to get you on the mat often with great prizes at the end. Meet Jackie Lattimore

This SO member had a record 92 practices during the SO Summer Challenge! Her yoga journey began after years of suffering from the affects of lupus. Lupus is a chronic inflammatory condition that can affect various organs such as the skin, blood, respiratory, musculoskeletal, kidney, and heart. “Practicing yoga helped heal my mind and body. It allowed me to release the stress and turmoil that I was feeling about how my life and body had changed.” Read more in this month’s newsletter!

Come flow for a cause on Friday, July 12 at the 6:45 Southern Flow Class. While every other Friday 6:45 is $5 Friday, once a month we invite Southern Om clients and friends to enjoy a high energy yoga class and make a generous donation to that month’s charity.

Crossroads Group Home offers programs for young women who are victims of sexual abuse from all over the state of South Carolina. These programs facilitate emotional healing and growth, physical health, basic education, restorative independent living skills, social and recreational functioning and vocational pursuit. Residents take part daily in the routine of a working farm and animals, children and families are integrated whenever possible.

SO Welcomes Ginnie Conley-Suleyman

Southern Om welcomes new instructor Ginnie Conley-Suleyman to our teaching staff.  Ginnie hails originally from upstate New York.  She was trained as a yoga instructor when she worked at Canyon Ranch Resort in Lenox, MA.  She has worked with and been schooled by practitioners of Asthanga, Kripalu, Iyengar, and Hatha yoga.

In addition to teaching at Southern Om, Ginnie has a full-time job as a sports performance coach at Acceleration Sports Institute, part of Greenville Health System.

Ginnie will be teaching the early morning Southern 26 series. Come enjoy this invigorating morning sequence of 26 static postures – sure to start your day with energized muscles and a calm peace of mind!


Summer Challenge Underway!

Program is inspiring LOTS of extra practices

Southern Om kicked off its 2nd annual Summer Challenge on June 12. The SO Challenge is a 70-day challenge designed to get you on the mat often with great prizes at the end. It is not too late to get started! All you have to do is practice!  If you practice 70 times, you will earn 2 months of unlimited yoga.  50 practices earns you one free month and 30 practices (or more) earns you a free t-shirt.

Charity Yoga Class Supports Lindley’s Alliance for Disabled Youth

Come flow for a cause on Friday, June 14 at the 6:45 Southern Flow Class.  While every other Friday 6:45 is $5 Friday, once a month we invite Southern Om clients and friends to enjoy a high energy yoga class and make a generous donation to that month’s charity. Reigning Miss Greenville County Lindley Mayer has two disabled siblings who who inspired her to start her own 501(c)3 charity in 2004, Lindley’s Alliance for Disabled Youth, to help other children who have disabilities.

Lindley will be at Southern Om on Friday, June 14 at 6:15 to meet everyone and kick off the charity class.

Whole Foods Market Presents Film Screening at Southern Om on June 15 

FREE SCREENING: VANISHING OF THE BEES on Saturday, June 15 from 6-8 pm. We are sharing the buzz about the disappearance of bees around the world. Southern Om Team Gets Fully Immersed in Charleston with Baron Baptiste

Several SO instructors and students made the trip to Charleston this past weekend for Baron Baptiste’s All Day Immersion.  The 11 hour day included lots of yoga practice, meditation, journaling and self exploration.  It was a wonderful opportunity to join 350+ other yogis from the Southeast for such an energetic and intense experience. Baron will be doing another all day immersion in Washington, DC this Fall.  Check out the Baptiste Yoga website for more details!

Jessica Clohessy Joins SO Instructor Team

We are pleased to welcome Jessica Clohessy to our teaching staff! Many of you will recognize Jessica as she has brought her enthusiasm to the Southern Om front desk for the last year.  Jessica has just completed her teacher training at Yoga One studio in Charlotte, NC.  She will be teaching the Southern Flow series at Southern Om.
